ICAR-KVK, West Garo Hills organizes vocational training programme on “Dairy Farming”

A six days vocational training programme on “Dairy Farming” was organized by ICAR- Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tura, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya from 4th July to 9th July 2016 in its training hall in campus premises. The training was organized to impart knowledge to the farmers of Wes t Garo Hills who are engaged in dairy farming and need technological support to increase milk production. The growth of dairy sector in North East region is not up to the mark as tribal population in the region don’t prefer milk in their diet. However, with the increased awareness of positive contribution of milk as a wholesome food item for all, it has now made its entry into the tribal people’s diet enhancing thereby the scope of milk production in the region. Considering this scope, the farming community engaged in milk sector needs to be given the desired technological support for increasing the production. With this purpose, the above mentioned vocational training programme was conducted with the participation of 24 farmers practicing dairy farming from Rongram, Damalgre, Ranggandi, Asanang, Boldurenggre, Duragre, Durakantagre, Bokmagre and Dalu areas of West Garo Hills. Emphasis was given for fodder production, as it plays an important role in feeding of cows by reducing cost of concentrate feeds. A visit to KVK’s dairy and fodder farm was done for practical demonstration to the participants.
